Early Life and Career
Born in 1868 in Paris, Camille du Gast was a woman of privilege. She grew up in a wealthy family and was educated at the prestigious Convent of the Sacred Heart. At the age of 21, she married a wealthy industrialist and became a socialite. However, she soon grew tired of the monotonous life of high society and yearned for something more exciting.
In 1900, du Gast discovered her passion for racing while attending the Paris World's Fair. She became enamored with the speed and thrill of the automobile and decided to pursue a career in motorsports. She purchased her first car, a 20hp Panhard-Levassor, and began competing in races throughout France.
Racing Successes and Achievements
Du Gast quickly made a name for herself in the male-dominated world of motorsports. She won her first race in 1901, and the following year, she became the first woman to participate in the prestigious Paris-Berlin race. She started last and finished in 33rd place out of 122 entrants, an impressive feat for a woman in a field dominated by men.
In 1903, du Gast achieved her greatest racing success when she won the Paris-Madrid race, becoming the first woman to win a major international motorsport event. Despite the dangerous conditions of the race, which claimed the lives of several drivers and spectators, du Gast drove with skill and determination to claim victory.
